Department of Mathematics


History of the Department:-
We are a department of Mathematics within the College of Arts and Sciences. We offer degree & Honours  programs at Bachelor's level.
Our department strives to:

  1. Provide a current, comprehensive, and collaborative student-centered learning environment for Mathematics and professional values associated with the discipline
  2. Advance a client-centered environment that addresses the computing needs of students, the profession, and community at large
  3. Prepare students for professional careers or advanced studies in Mathematics
  4. Pursue opportunities for faculty and students to contribute to interdisciplinary efforts
  5. Promote the discovery, dissemination and application of computing knowledge
  6. Foster personal and professional growth for all students and faculty

The Department of Mathematics will continue to be the department of choice for students seeking high-quality graduate degree programs in Mathematics. The Department will be recognized across the nation and the global community for education that produces diverse and versatile professionals. Graduates from our department will be able to:

  1. Conceptualize, analyze, design, implement, and evaluate a computerized solution to a real life problem using appropriate tools;
  2. Work effectively as a team member;
  3. Enter a professional mathematics position or enter an appropriate graduate program;
  4. Communicate effectively through speaking, writing, and the use of presentation tools;
  5. Adapt to technological changes and innovations in the discipline;

Be aware of ethical and societal concerns relating to mathematics in society and to be able to apply this knowledge in the conduct of their careers.
1. Faculty Profile, Adequacy and Competency: The department of mathematics, Sir Gurudas Mahavidyalaya has no sanctioned substentative posts. At present, there are 2 full-time college pay contractual teachers and one college pay guest teacher. One post lies vacant till date. All the members of the faculty are competent enough to carry out the entire academic and co-curricular duties pertaining to the department. All the faculty members are duly qualified as per U.G.C. norms.

 

2. Students profile according to programs of the Study, Gender, and Region etc :-
 Students of Howrah , Kolkata , North & South 24 Parganas district obtaining high marks in Mathematics in the Higher Secondary Examination, generally take admission to the B.Sc. Mathematics Honours Course. In Honours course, one fifth of the students are girl.
In General course, students of Physics and Computer Science Honours obtaining high marks in Mathematics in the Higher Secondary examination, generally take admission from Kolkata district. But some students of the General course take admission with only pass marks in Mathematics in the Higher Secondary Examination, High School Madrasa Examination from Ultodanga  locality. In General course, the ratio of girls and boys is usually 3:35.
